Keeping it Local, One SMB to Another

KCS Helps Fellow Denver Business John Atencio Grow

John Atencio has been a popular jeweler in the Denver area since opening in 1976, growing to six stores and an online business. But getting its network infrastructure sorted as the business grew was another story.

“We did as much as we could on our own, but it was extraordinarily inefficient, and things would take much longer than they should have,” EVP Lex Atencio admitted.

With multiple retail locations and a central office, they needed a streamlined solution that would help them serve customers and maintain strong communication while keeping costs down and improving cybersecurity.

How Pax8 Helped

John Atencio turned to Pax8 to help them find an IT partner who could take over their tech needs. Pax8 introduced them to Kenyatta Computer Services (KCS), who heard their concerns, did an IT assessment and immediately got to work.

“We wanted someone local,” Atencio says. “We knew that we wanted someone hands-on that we could have a human connection with. KCS was the only company that met us face to face.”

KCS was able to take outdated, siloed networks with different providers at each location and standardize their network infrastructure with Lumen through the Pax8 Marketplace. The new network provided unified WiFi and LAN access, and enabled monitoring of all locations within a “single pane of glass.”

“You can’t put a price on the system KCS built,” Atencio says. “It’s helped us be cohesive. The doors keep opening on things that we can do because we now have everything backed up in the cloud and centralized.”

While working through the network connection process, KCS was able to better secure John Atencio’s data and provided disaster recovery planning with Dropsuite for data backup.

“They came in and streamlined everything,” Atencio says. “They reduced our pricing structures with our telecommunications companies. They installed security services that we didn’t have, and they were able to get it all under one roof.”

KCS says using Opportunity Explorer in the Pax8 Marketplace has helped them match solutions to gaps in clients’ tech stacks.

“Opportunity Explorer saves us so much time,” says Nahjee Maybin, CEO of KCS. “Instead of having spreadsheets and looking through different invoices, we’re able to see, visually mapped, where the stacks align, find those gaps and suggest toolsets to our customers.”

Outcomes and Results

Streamlining their approach to network communications helps John Atencio save $1,600 per month. KCS also helped them dramatically increase their internet speed from less than 10Mbps to 100Mbps.

“My favorite part about this project was really making our customer happy,” Maybin says. “We’re people-first when it comes to IT, and we really want to hear what people need and help them holistically.”

Employees at John Atencio can now service customers faster and communicate seamlessly between locations.

“With KCS and Nahjee and his team, they get small businesses,” Atencio adds. “They’re a small business, we’re a small business. They’re a family business, we’re a family business.”

By fostering personal relationships and connecting the right MSP, client and vendors through the Marketplace, Pax8 provides the connective tissue to support stronger small businesses everywhere.

“By partnering with Pax8, it makes it easy to work on projects like this. They really give us all the support we need, from procurement to service delivery.”
