Microsoft recently did a case study on how the Pax8 MIP (Managed Intelligence Provider) model helped a US-based MSP, Sourcepass, go from managing Microsoft licenses to building and delivering functional AI agents for their SMB customers. And that story matters because of the market it represents.
SMBs are 90% of all businesses globally, around 400 million firms. They want AI. They’re asking for it. But most of them don’t have the internal resources to operationalize it, govern it or teach their teams new workflows. As my colleague Elliott Eliason put it,“SMBs hear about AI and want to be part of the wave, but they don’t want to spend thousands without getting results back.”
That’s the gap our partners sit in. And Microsoft recognized Pax8 for helping partners close it — not just with technology, but with the enablement, training and hands-on support to make it real and repeatable.

MSP to MIP — What the Shift Actually Looks Like
We talk a lot about the evolution from Managed Service Provider to Managed Intelligence Provider being a fundamentally different way of delivering value to customers and the next evolution in the modern MSP’s growth journey. Here’s what it looks like in practice.
Sourcepass joined our AI Innovation Group, a cohort of partners working through real AI agent use cases with our team. One of their logistics customers needed a smarter way to match financing platforms to customer profiles. So we sat down with Sourcepass, showed them how to build an agent for that exact problem in Microsoft Copilot Studio, and then helped them build it themselves.
What happened next is the part I love telling.
Through the process, our AI Innovation Team became indispensable to Sourcepass. As I said in the case study, “Once you can identify a business problem and solve it through an agent, not only are you able to monetize the management of that agent, but it creates a snowball effect. It turns into multiple opportunities with that customer and then the relationship becomes very sticky because you understand their business processes better than anyone else does.”
That’s what becoming an MIP is all about. You stop being the person who keeps the lights on and start being the person who drives the business forward. It’s a different conversation and a completely different revenue model.
How Pax8 Gets You There
Sourcepass isn’t a one-off success story. They got there because of the infrastructure Pax8 has built for every partner in our ecosystem.
Our partners begin their AI transformation journey with the MIP Playbook, which is our framework for helping partners discover, sell, buy, build, implement and manage agentic solutions. Enablement programs like Guided Growth, Kickstart and Peer Groups, strengthen partners’ capabilities across the Microsoft tech stack.
Guided Growth in particular is a structured path toward Microsoft Solutions Partner designations and specializations where partners see an average of 120% revenue growth. In our Data and AI Guided Growth track, partners don’t just think about AI. They deliver real business outcomes with MSP-built strategies and tools that lead transformation. Plus, our Solutions Consultants are always available for a 30-minute Microsoft Business Review where we look at your unique business and find hidden opportunities.
We also don’t ask partners to go anywhere we haven’t been ourselves. We hold six Microsoft Solutions Partner designations, and we sponsor certifications for every employee who wants to validate their Microsoft expertise. We use Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Chat internally every day, because if we’re going to help you sell this, we want to make sure we’re experts.
What’s Coming — Pay Attention to This
Big things in AI transformation are coming from Microsoft and Pax8.
Microsoft Agent 365
Microsoft Agent 365 launched in the Pax8 Marketplace on May 1, providing MSPs with a centralized view to observe, govern and secure AI agents, ensuring the governance foundation that customers expect. In the real world, AI agents introduce new considerations immediately like access, data boundaries, monitoring and who owns outcomes when something goes wrong. The partners I’ve seen win with AI don’t treat governance as paperwork, they use it to make the deployment safer, easier to approve and easier to scale across customers. When you can clearly explain how an agent is secured, how data is handled and how accountability is maintained, the conversation moves from “interesting” to “we can roll this out.” Governance is what turns experimentation into a service you can confidently sell and support.
Pax8 Agent Store — Launching this Summer
Agent Store is one of the most exciting things we’re bringing to market this year.
When Agent Store launches, it will deliver ready-to-use agentic products for the core workflows of MSPs and their SMB clients. We’ve partnered with a group of leading AI companies including Microsoft to include their agentic products in the Agent Store at launch so partners can find the right solution for the right customer conversation. What’s more, partners will be able to build their own repeatable IP (agents and workflows easily replicated across clients) to create high-margin, differentiated revenue streams.
Whether you’re ready to lead with agents today or need us to help you get there, we’ve built the path.
The Path Is Built. Are You on It?
Microsoft’s recognition is a huge win for us. But what matters most is what our partners are doing, the skills they’re building, the risks they’re taking and the conversations they’re having.
Ask yourself a couple of questions: Are your customers being transformed by AI right now? And are you the one leading that transformation?
The path from MSP to MIP is real. Pax8 has built it. Now it’s your turn.
